HPC and Big Data, A marriage of convenience?

Prof. María S. Pérez gave this invited talk at 13th RES USERS MEETING

Abstract:

EuroHPC is a joint initiative between the EU and European Member States with the aim of developing an innovative ecosystem in supercomputing and data intensive applications, technology and skills. The convergence between HPC and Big Data is one of the topics covered in this joint undertaking. This is also the main topic of other initiatives, such as Big Data and Extreme-Scale Computing (BDEC).

This talk describes Tyr, a blob storage system that provided built-in transactions while retaining sequential consistency and high throughput under heavy access concurrency. This system and other blob storage systems are candidates for replacing traditional storage for both HPC and Big Data applications, constituting a converged solution for them.
